American Politics and Media Film Series

"American Politics in Film: Media and Public Perception" series will screen Tuesdays from 6 to 9pm in the Community Room at Wood Library from September 16 through October 21. Learn about politics by watching movies. Discussion follows. Hosted by John Michalko and Tom White. Free and open to high schoolers and adults. Here's the schedule. Free Investment Classes Online

Gas prices got you down? Worried about the economy? Stay home and get informed. Take a free financial class online. On Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, you are invited to take a free online class "Smart Investing @ Your Library: Planning Decade by Decade." A second online class, "Smart Investing @ Your Library: Risks and Rewards (Asset Allocation)" will be held Thursday, September 25, 2008 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The classes are free at OPAL (Online Programming for All Libaries). Click the OPAL link above, scroll to the program, and click "OPAL Online Auditorium." First time users will need to install the tcConference plug-in.

Paul Santos, the Director of Finance, Facilities, and Human Resources at the Alliance Library System will make the presentations and lead an informal discussion. The discussions are part of Smart Investing @ Your Library, a series of events and resources (in person, on the web, and in Second Life) to help inform individual investors.

Host: Alliance Library System, with support from the American Library Association and FINRA Investor Education Foundation. All OPAL (Online Programming for All Libraries) public events are free of charge and open to everyone worldwide. Most OPAL online programs last about an hour.

Michael Moore Film Free Download

Michael Moore's new film "Slacker Uprising" from Brave New Films will not be coming to a theater near you. Instead, it is premiering online at BlipTV. This will be the first major feature-length film by a noted director to debut for free via the internet. You will be able to download the entire movie for free on September 23rd if you sign up at SlackerUprising.com. You will be notified by email when the download is available. If you prefer DVD, Wood Library will have the DVD available for borrowing sometime after September 23. "Slacker Uprising" traces Michael Moore’s 62-city tour of the swing states during the 2004 Presidential election to convince millions of non-voters under the age of 30 to give voting a chance. Wood Library has launched a new video series called "Read Locally" featuring local authors talking about their books. Here is the first episode with Kevin Andrew Cotter on his new local history The Lurking Devil of Murder. Library videos are posted on the Wood Library YouTube Channel.

Fill the Pantry Shelves! Food Drive at Wood Library

Wood Library‘s Executive Director, Carol Shama is pleased to announce that the library, located at 134 North Main St, Canandaigua will partner with Canandaigua Churches in Action (CCIA) during September to collect donations for the CCIA Food Pantry. From September 8 - 30, members of the community may drop off non-perishable food and personal care items in collection boxes placed inside the rear doors of the library.

CCIA emphasizes that donations of food and personal care items are needed throughout the year, not only at holiday times. During these difficult economic times, families find their resources being stretched more and more each week. This has resulted in increased use of the CCIA Food Pantry. Sandy Voigt of CCIA says that from February through May 2008 the number of families using the CCIA Food Pantry increased from 182 to 287. Donations of personal care items are especially important because these can not be purchased using Food Stamps. All donations will be used to fill the shelves at the CCIA Food Pantry.

Last Blooms of Summer Slide Show

Master Gardner Chris Benard presents "The Last Blooms Of Summer" slide show on Monday, September 8 at 10:30am in the Community Room at Wood Library. The program highlights both wildflowers and weeds growing in the fields, along the roads, down in the swamp and sometimes, unfortunately, in our yards. You will learn their origins, how they were used in the past and which ones may reappear as modern medical marvels. Coffee and breakfast snacks served. The program is open to the public. Donations are accepted.

Chris Benard is a Master Gardener, currently President of the Victor Garden Club and past Trees Chairman for 7th District Federated Garden Clubs of New York. Benard has an avid interest in wild plant lore and presents slide shows on the subject to organizations and groups.
