Jessica Cutting, a member of the Wood Library staff, recommends The Things They Carried, an earlier work of fiction by Tim O'Brien. Jessica says: "This compilation of stories reflects O'Brien's experiences in the Vietnam War. Throughout the book, O'Brien conveys a sense of what it was actually like for the soldiers during the war. They experienced pain and suffering of the acutest kind: friends dying, having to kill other men, trying to say alive under the worst conditions, and even fight with themselves to find a reason to stay alive. It is easy to forget this is historical fiction."
National Book Award winner Tim O'Brien chose to share his war experience as fiction because he felt it was more emotionally powerful. Vietnam and the 1960s are frequent themes in O'Briens other books. Get details on The Things They Carried in the OWWL catalog or place a hold.

Catch the Magic Bug
Magician David Moreland returns to Wood Library Monday, June 30 at 7:00PM. His amazing tricks are fun for the whole family. See the Incredible Moreland pull dozens of toy insects from a volunteer’s ear! His show is one of many insect-related activities planned by Wood Library as part of its summer reading program. Computer Students Graduate
Congratulations to the sixteen students who completed the Never-Too-Late computer course at Wood Library. Some of the students are shown at the left with their instructor Louise Smith. Students graduated on June 17th and June 19th. The very popular six-week course is held each spring and fall, and is sponsored by Wood Library and the Ontario County Office for the Aging with funding from the New York State Office for the Aging. The course covers how to use the mouse and keyboard all the way up to searching for information on the Internet and doing email. The class is designed to build on the skills learned the previous week. Adult Services Librarian Barbara Henry says the whole idea of the course is to help seniors feel comfortable and confident on the computer and to give them skills they can keep on using long after the course is finished. The graduates are: Richard Appel, Norma Bay, Walter Fahnestock, Carol Gruschow, Aileen Pellow, Skippy Raines, Charlene Searles, Shirley Stephens, Carolyn Ticknor, Ronald Ticknor, Marcia Tillson, Hiram Tindall, Dee Wallace, Wally Wallace, Lucy Windsor, and Robert Windsor. Helen Sherman, Director of the Ontario County Office for the Aging, congratulated the graduates in a pre-taped video message. Watch it here.

Catch the Reading Bug!
Weave a web and catch the bug, the reading bug. This summer @ Wood Library. Children's Librarian Mary Ferris invites you to go to the Children's Page to see what's happening for children of all ages. Our summer schedule of programs will begin June 30th. What's the buzz? Reading is the way to have a great summer! We have lots of special programs to go along with the bug theme, including 3 reading clubs for children, crafts, movies, a magician and so much more. Each Monday morning, a new insect will move into the library to be our very special guest for a week. A zoologist from Wild Things will present a short program at 10:30 telling all about the bug. Nature photographer Peter Blackwood will share his favorite up-close bug photos in the Community Room. Parents, why is summer reading so important to your children? Find out on the Parents Page.
