Now you can connect to Wood Library on Facebook--yet another way to keep up with what is happening. About 30% of adult respondents on the recent Wood Library Survey indicated that they use Facebook or Myspace social media software. Writers for Literacy in the News

Thanks to Dave Wheeler, editor of Steppin' Out section in the Canandaigua Daily Messenger, for the article about the Writers for Literacy book, Story Pot Luck. It appeared in the March 26 issue. We invite you to read the article Pages of Plenty and to attend the book launch party on Tuesday, March 31 at 7pm in the Community Room at Wood Library, 134 North Main Street, Canandaigua. Writers for Literacy is a volunteer project at Wood Library. The group consists of eight writers who wanted to make a difference in their community by writing easy-to-read stories for adult learners.

Canandaigua Reads!

This month Canandaigua Reads! Jim the Boy and The Blue Star by Tony Earley. Here's the scoop from Canandaigua Reads! on the Canandaigua School District website:

"Great things happen when all Canandaigua Reads!, the annual community reads project when our whole community is invited to read and discuss a single book. Well, usually it's a single book. But this year, it's two novels...and again we are excited to have the author coming to town! The 2009 Canandaigua Reads! selections are Jim the Boy and The Blue Star by Tony Earley. The two novels form a nearly continuous coming-of-age story of a boy named Jim. Spare, intimate, quietly moving, the two novels reveal a very normal boy from southern Appalachia, raised by his Mom and three uncles, who sees his world slowly unfold around him, and the currents of his family's past and the wider world slowly ensnare him. Please join us. Read Jim the Boy and The Blue Star! Canandaigua Reads! is a partnership of Wood Library, Canandaigua's Community Reading Partnership, Finger Lakes Community College, and the Canandaigua City School District."

Library Bell Ringers at Salvation Army

Here's some raw video footage of the Pizza Party on February 3 at the Salvation Army on Saltonstall Street here in Canandaigua. Barbara Henry and Gail Wiechmann attended from Wood Library. We ran into staffer Judy Baker who was there with her church group. We enjoyed hearing more about the many programs and services at the Salvation Army. Last December Wood Library staff rang the bells to help raise money for the Salvation Army. It is one of many ways Wood Library is active in the community, helping to make it a great place for all. Each year Captain Ginter and his staff invite all the bell ringers down to the Salvation Army for a pizza appreciation party.

History on the Big Screen

Watch Live History at the Library

On Tuesday, January 20 Wood Library will provide live Inauguration Day coverage for public viewing from 10am to 4pm in the 2nd floor Community Room. Watch a live Internet stream on the big screen from several sites including CNNonline and Hulu. You are welcome to bring friends, associates and lunch. Coffee will be provided. Swearing in ceremony and inaugural address starts at 12 Noon with parade following at approximately 2:30.

2 More Days! Food Pantry Drive

There is still time to give. Wood Library's Food Pantry Drive will end at 9pm on Tuesday, September 30. Benefits the Food Pantry sponsored by the Canandaigua Churches In Action (CCIA). Fill those pantry shelves!

Fill the Pantry Shelves! Food Drive at Wood Library

Wood Library‘s Executive Director, Carol Shama is pleased to announce that the library, located at 134 North Main St, Canandaigua will partner with Canandaigua Churches in Action (CCIA) during September to collect donations for the CCIA Food Pantry. From September 8 - 30, members of the community may drop off non-perishable food and personal care items in collection boxes placed inside the rear doors of the library.

CCIA emphasizes that donations of food and personal care items are needed throughout the year, not only at holiday times. During these difficult economic times, families find their resources being stretched more and more each week. This has resulted in increased use of the CCIA Food Pantry. Sandy Voigt of CCIA says that from February through May 2008 the number of families using the CCIA Food Pantry increased from 182 to 287. Donations of personal care items are especially important because these can not be purchased using Food Stamps. All donations will be used to fill the shelves at the CCIA Food Pantry.

Bug of the Week on TV

The children's summer program "Bug of the Week" got a video Bright Spot on Channel 13 WHAM-TV. Bug of the Week introduces a different live critter each Monday morning at 10:30am in the Children's Room at Wood Library. The video highlights the Defenders of Wild Life, a pre-vocational community program sponsored by Bridges for Brain Injury, a new non-profit agency that just opened in June. The agency is located at 5297 Parkside Drive, Suite 307, in Canandaigua and can be reached at (585) 396-0070. Go watch the video.
